About Us

Work together to a common goal

The 72-foot Challenge Wales yacht was originally raced around the world in 2000 amongst 11 other identical boats. Several years later the Welsh based charity Maiden Voyage purchased the boat to enable the people of Wales to experience sailing. In June 2009 the charity was renamed Challenge Wales and restructured to enable it to drive forward and work successfully towards its original charitable goals.

Based in Cardiff Bay, South Wales, the Challenge Wales project relies on volunteers to not just crew the boat, but help with maintenance, fundraising, administration, marketing and raising awareness of the project throughout Wales.

Voyages on Challenge Wales can range from 1 day to a few days or a few weeks.

With 12 crew members, one of which could be you, and up to six sea staff you will learn the art of safe passage making (enabling you to understand the weather, tides, charts), how to be part of a team and have an involvement in most activities on the boat including taking the helm. With most young people and clients having little or no sailing experience this is a fantastic opportunity to work together to a common goal and experience what an ocean racing yacht is like.

What you will also experience is amazing adventures, the opportunity to experience different countries and cultures, the chance to make new friends and take home great memories that will last a lifetime.

In 2010 Challenge Wales became a Royal Yachting Association (RYA) Training Centre. Under the Challenge Wales Training Centre sailing qualifications can be undertaken by all ages including Start Yachting, Competent Crew, Watch Leader, Day Skipper and Coastal Skipper.

Challenge Wales is ideal for schools, colleges & universities, young persons groups, uniformed organisations, sports & social clubs or young people involved in an alternative curriculum. In addition to young persons sail training trips and to help fundraise for Challenge Wales there are also opportunities for big boat sailing experiences, stag & hen sailing days, themed pirate birthday parties and plenty of other trips for various ages (aged 12 – 75 years).
